Riley's First Date? (A "Short" Review)

Director(s): Josh Cooley
Date Released: 2015
Released Alongside: Inside Out* (Home Media)

That ACDC scene is really awkward to watch…

Talk about standardizing the hell out of an original concept.  Riley’s First Date (ending irritatingly with a ?) is just so…standard compared to its feature length predecessor.  The tropes are rampant: Riley’s dad automatically defensive about a boy in his house, her mom trying to be hip and “cool with the kids, for sheezy”—the entire ACDC air guitar scene.  The short made me cringe as much as Riley did when her mom began using “slang” talk like the cool kids did back in the 90s—which no sane parent has ever done seriously in real life, yet every mediocre film/show believes actually happens.  I really don’t have much else to say about Riley’s First Date—it’s an ill-conceived short which cheapens upon the original film’s unique concept in an unfunny fashion.  Skip it and go watch Inside Out instead for sheezy.
